A once-abandoned Victorian school building on Balderton Street has been given a remarkable new life as The Schoolhouse, a four-storey gallery and studio space opened by acclaimed gallerist Sarah Myerscough. Known for championing the “crafted arts” – work that bridges fine art, design, and craftsmanship – Myerscough has transformed the former parish school into a serene, light-filled environment for exhibitions, workshops, and creative collaboration.
Designed with sustainability and material honesty at its core, The Schoolhouse retains much of its historic character while introducing calm modern detailing in lime plaster, oak, and natural fibres. The result is part gallery, part retreat — a space that invites slow looking and quiet reflection. Exhibitions will showcase work by leading craft artists represented by the gallery, including Eleanor Lakelin, Christopher Kurtz, and Erna Aaltonen.
In a district known for its luxury boutiques and blue-chip art dealers, The Schoolhouse brings a fresh, tactile sensibility — an antidote to the digital and the mass-produced, and a sign that Mayfair’s cultural life continues to evolve in unexpected ways.
